Have you thought of getting you FM3? Then your vehicle is legal as long as it is current.

RE: On the Road in Mexico #4

Well we arrived in Zihua last Monday evening. The trip here, crossing at Laredo, was pleasant & uneventlful- just the way we like it. Our condo is amazing! We made a very wise choice. We are nesting & settling & shopping & buying furniture- just as it should be. The RV park at El Manglar looks great. There are just 2 full timers there, but reservations are full for the season- the way it was when we left last April. There are often short term openings for those who are travelling & just passing through- and there is always the chance of a long term cancellation- so don't just give up if that is where you want to be. We travelled our usual route past Monertey, Saltillo (stayed there overnight), Matahuala, San Luis Potosi. We spent 2 nights in Leon while visiting friends, then past Morelia & went to Quiroga (on Lake Patzcuaro) to order our dining room table/chairs. Our little Honda was full to the roof, literally, & then we bought our Mayan Calendar table & tied it to the roof. Paul thinks we are now Mexican! There is a wonderful new toll road from Salamanca to Morelia that cuts driving time by 2+hours. The roads were all in great condition. Previously rough areas have been re-surfaced. It was an easy, pleasant drive. So if you headed this way- fear not!

RE: On the Road in Mexico #4

Hi you 2! Good to hear from you. Great pics! Our patio at El Maglar will be taken over by our good friends Anna & Dieter- we are happy about that. Thanks for the kind words. We will be just down the beach- a 2 minute stroll- we will probably still sit in front of El Manglar to be with our friends- or maybe poolside at our place- or maybe....... who really cares? We are in Wichita tonight. Will cross into Mexico on Friday & arrive in Zihua next Tues/Wed. We won't be hard to find if you want to come calling. Have a good trip.

On the Road in Mexico #4

Hi everyone! We hope you all had a great summer. Ours here was not exactly good beach weather. We spent a total of 9 days on our beautiful beach- and many of those were only for a couple of hours. Oh well, will talk to mother nature & see what we can do about next year. We have been busy working on the addition to our house. It’s not yet finished, but there isn’t too much left to do in the spring when we get home.
So this is the 1st entry of the season. We are anxious to get to our new casa in Zihuatanejo. It SHOULD be finished when we arrive. Sanin says it’s almost 100% that it will be ready for us. Good grief. We are leaving home on Oct. 14. We will vote here in Grand Marais, stop for our flu shots in Selkirk, and keep on going. It will be quite a challenge to get our “stuff” into the Honda! Missing the RV already! Paul did a calculation to see what it would cost to go with the truck & RV with this year’s gas prices. He thinks about $1500. one way. He figures with the Honda it will be about $350. We’ll see! At any rate we are looking forward to a simpler way of travel. We’ll try it & see how we like it this way. We plan to cross into Mexico on Friday the 17th, visit with our Mexican friends Arturo & Patty & kids on Sunday the 19th in Leon. We need to stop in the Patzcuaro area to order our dining room table and arrange delivery- one drawback of not having that big truck. We should roll into Zihua around Tuesday or Wednesday, the 21st or 22nd. We hope this winter won’t pass too quickly. We are expecting some company- daughter Andrea & grandson Taylor (9) are coming for 2 weeks at Xmas. Dave & Diane will also visit Zihua again in January. Who knows who else will join us? All are welcome. Of course, we are also looking forward to seeing our “old neighbourhood friends” at the RV park. So now everyone is up to date & knows our plans. Please keep in touch during the winter. Will send lots of pics of the condo & the sunny beach & of course the RV park! I hear it helps with the sanity. I will also post road info as we travel. Hope to meet more of you this winter; we have made some wonderful friends over the last 5 years- friendships that began on this forum. Our best to all of you, Linda & Paul

RE: Route Cd Victoria to Acapulco to avoid Mexico City??

Nice trip. In my opinion, while the mileage is similar, it would be an easier drive to go to San L Potosi, Queretero, Cuernavaca, etc. The only part we haven't driven on that route is the stretch from Queretero to Toluca. The rest I can say with 1st hand experience is a very easy drive. We were pulling a 30' 5th & we took cuotas wherever available.

FM3 & leaving vehicle in Mexico

We are thinking about driving our Honda there in Oct. Once we are there, we will get our FM3's. Will the expiry date on our import certificate be extended due to the FM3's? I know the actual cert. would not be changed, but could we then leave the Honda there & fly home? It would then become our Zihua car & live there. Also, once we leave it there, do we keep it registered & insured here? Can we register it there? Can we get insurance there? I know most Mexicans don't bother with insurance. What do most gringos do in this situation? Factual info only please.

Books on Rving in Mexico

I have managed to collect many, many books on RVing in Mexico. I am looking for homes for them. I had thought to try to sell, but don't know how to reach those that might be interested, so am willing to GIVE them away. These books range from Sanborn's logs to autobiographies, to retirement in Mexico ideas....you name it! If interested, please pm me.

We have arrived home and are also wondering WHY?? Please see my final post in "On the Road in Mexico #3"- that sums it up for this trip. The roads were absolutely great all the way home- except for here in Manitoba of course.

RE: On the Road in Mexico #3

Now we are home. We are not happy to say it was not a completely uneventful trip! We enjoyed our stops in Patzcuaro & Guanajuato. We got lots of neat ideas for our condo. Of course while we were in Guanajuato we spent a day in Leon with our friends Arturo & Paty & the 3 kids. Mariana has decided against the trip to Canada after all- she will be getting a car instead. Actually, if it was me, I would also opt for the car! It will improve her lifestyle for many years. While a trip provides many wonderful & longlasting memories, for a 16 year old it just doesn’t stack up against a car. We crossed into the US at Laredo on Sunday, the 13th and enjoyed stops at Camping World & Ikea along the way. We were in Indianapolis on Wed., the 16th. We spent the night at the Camping World there. Across the street from Camping World is a restaurant called Bob Evans. Before stopping at the Camping World we pulled into the restaurant parking lot & had dinner there. The building is in the centre of a very large lot- with no obstructions whatsoever, so it was easy to pull in there. In the morning, Paul decided to stop there for coffee. They have a take out window on the side of the building- no lane or anything; just a wide open stop. After the coffee was handed over, we started to pull away- fortunately, very slowly- so as not to spill the coffee, of course. Then we heard the sound. What the heck could we have hit? Well, apparently there is, um, WAS a small metal awning above the window. It sliced a hole right into the bedroom of the 5th! And the restaurant needs a new awning. Pics below. Thank heaven for insurance. So we continued on after leaving all our info & having a session with the duct tape. We arrived in Brantford, Ontario on Friday the 18th, had a major shop at Ikea & spent some quality time with Jeff. On Monday the 21st we left Ontario & headed for Pembina, North Dakota. We arrived there on Wed. the 23rd. During the night it rained a lot. Our scan appointments were 1st thing Thursday morning, and then we set off for Winnipeg- an easy hour’s drive. It was sleeting & windy & very cold: -7- and there was a winter storm warning! Good grief! We managed to stay on the road and went to the insurance place, then dropped the 5th off at the dealership to be made “new” again. We spent the rest of Thurs. & all of Friday visiting kids & grand kids. Then on Sat. AM we loaded up most of our worldly goods from the 5th into boxes & into the truck. The truck was full to the brim, and next time we are in Wpg. we will have to load up again. It was just like moving! Never again!! While we were working in the 5th & loading the truck it was windy & cold & snowing. The temp was -7 and with the wind chill it felt like -17. Not impressed. Anyway we arrived home to a house with no problems at all- except the snow & the cold. Pics below. It took us 2 ½ hours to unload the truck. Good grief- never again. All is well in Grand Marais. We are now sort of unpacked & settled. We will spend the next few months working on the addition to the house. Linda will be going to Disneeyland in August with daughter Andrea & grandson Taylor. It will be time to return to Zihua before we know it! We’re not sure yet wether we will get a cap or a camper for the truck, or if we will just drive the Honda- or trade it in on an SUV or another car or…………. We will just have to do our research & let you know in October. Have a great summer everyone. Keep in touch. Hope you have enjoyed our journal this year.
Best to everyone, Linda & Paul

RE: On the Road in Mexico #3

I have been busy sorting “stuff” in the 5th. No use in taking things home with us only to bring them back again in October. I bought quite a few large plastic bins & am filling them to the brim! Memo who has the restaurant here at our RV park has agreed to store them for us at the back of the restaurant. Julia will be keeping an eye on our condo developments & sending us pics when new things get completed. When the condo is ready, probably in August, she will have our “stuff” moved into the condo. The weather has changed quite a bit here in the last 2 weeks. The overnight lows are now around 24 instead of 19-20, during the day it is usually 32 and the humidity is much higher, so it feels a lot warmer. The ocean has warmed considerably and the sand is too hot to walk on, so thank God for Crocs!
We will be leaving Zihua on Wednesday, April 9. We will spend a few days in the Guanajuato/Dolores Hidalgo/Leon area to visit Arturo & Paty & kids and buy some ceramic “stuff”, then cross into the USA on 13th or 14th. We will head once again to Brantford, Ontario to visit son Jeff. We will leave Ontario on the 21st. We have made appointments for early morning on the 24th in Pembina, North Dakota, for a new screening procedure (mostly ultra sound technology) that lets you know if you are at risk for stroke. The cost is only $129. & takes about ½ hour, so we thought it might be good info to get. It checks out the circulatory system, etc. Why not?? We will arrive in Wpg. on the 24th & will take the 5th to the dealership to get the landing gear fixed/replaced- the one that stopped working last November! We will spend a few days in Wpg. to look after some business & see the grandkids, then head home to our forest retreat around 26th or 27th. Then we will get to work on the addition at our house! Before we know it, we will be on the way back here! I will write on road conditions when I get home. Here is a pic of our construction site. Our unit is on the 2nd floor- on the right.

RE: Our Mexico trip was one in hell.

Oh my gosh! Sounds like a sequal to the movie "RV"- which by the way, we watch annually here in El Manglar, Zihuatanejo. We just pick an evening, make lots of popcorn & haul one of our TV's outside, everyone brings chairs & drinks, & we sit under the star lighted palms & laugh a lot!

RE: Need input on next years itinerary for mainland

thanks for the kind words, Moisheh. Did you read my thread lately? We bought a condo here in Zihua! Very exciting. Of course, it isn't built yet, but the shell is there so we can really see everything. We are still in Zihua- will leave here around April 10 & get home to Grand Beach around the 27th or so.
